The Trees in Florida Back Yards

Bamboo

The Old Bamboo

These bamboo trees were snapped in the Imperial Shores, Riverdale, Bonita Shores area of Bonita Springs, Florida.  There are bamboo trees along a lot of the canals, the Imperial River and other bodies of water in the Bonita Springs area.  We have a lot of bamboo here.  It’s a little noisy when it’s windy.  It squeaks and sounds a little like wooden wind chimes when it knocks together.

Bamboo has a history with early Florida settlers using the tree trunks, which are hollow, to hide their gold and treasures.  Neat idea, huh?

That was long before Wachovia was on every corner, of course.  No, not that corner, that’s Walgreen’s corner.  Wachovia is across the street from it.

At least bamboo didn’t have fees and over draft charges.

Bank Owned, Short Sale & Regular Real Estate Statistics

Condition of Sales in Bonita Springs

Bonita Springs Real Estate Sales Statistics

There’s no way to separate the truth of the real estate market from the rumor unless there are hard numbers to compare.  The news reports statistics on short sales and foreclosures for the entire area of Southwest Florida but everyone knows that real estate is local and you need to look at your city, not the county, to get the facts.

The numbers for the real estate sales for both Bonita Springs and Estero, Florida for the month of July 2009 are above in the graph.  The graph represents closed sales for real estate transactions.  About 65% of the recorded closed sales of real estate were regular real estate transactions, with no bank involved or REO [real estate owned].

That figure might surprise some considering how much the news talks about foreclosures and short sales.  Though we do have short sales and foreclosures in Bonita Springs and Estero the numbers aren’t as large as most would expect.  Of the closed sales in the month of July only 17% of them were short sales and about 18% of them were foreclosure.

The data used was collected from the Sunshine MLS on 8/10/2009.  This information is deemed accurate but not guaranteed.

Three Drill Sergeants, Elvis & a Cracked Windshield

IMG_1980

Yes, Drill Sergeant!

It only looks like they’re gawking and smiling at skirts.  I don’t think they were prepared for my style of stalkarazzi photography.  I’m a little worried that if they see that picture they’ll make me “drop and give ‘em twenty”.  I’m hoping that their “little to no sense of humor” act is just an act.  Hooah!

A week was taken off from work. It wasn’t a vacation, vacation but it was time away from Bonita Springs, real estate and even the weekly column for the paper.  Now, I’m back so pardon me while I take a brief departure from the typical Bonita Springs real estate postings. I wasn’t really planning on being so out of the loop but due to the isolation of the Ozarks and beyond, I had little to no internet access so it was a forced break.

Every once in a while I did read an email through my phone that read, “Where are you?” or “You’re never not online, what’s wrong?”  Everything is OK and I thank you concerned folks for asking.  I decided not to post as I drove across the country because, despite the fact that I have 14 ninjas also living in my house, there are a few troubled souls out there that didn’t need to know I was away.  You know who you are … start taking your pills as prescribed.

With little fanfare I left for Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri last week to see something I never thought I’d see in my life.  My youngest, 6-5, graduated from the Army and I just had to go see it with my own eyes.  He’s an MP now and jokingly referred to as super-cop.

The trip was met with a few detours for taking pictures and fits of sick, curiosity pit stops, too.  The first was Peppertown, Mississippi.  I had to eat and there happened to be a one restaurant in town. Look at what was at the “flea market” next door.  One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Peppertown Pepsi Machine

After Peppertown came Memphis.  I figured on my way to Missouri we should hook up with some friends, hit the best barbecue joints, find some good Blues and then look for Elvis … in no particular order.  Did I mention that it was miserably hot in Memphis?  It was, just ask LBD.

Hot In Memphis

It was also historic and very pretty in Memphis.  We loved the city.  There were street cars, cobblestone streets and tons of things to see and do.

Memphis Trolly Cars

There was also an Elvis sighting.  He’s alive and well, drinking Starbucks and smoking Kool Cigarettes at the *same* time in on the corner of Peabody and Third in Downtown Memphis a few blocks from Beal Street.  If you were wondering, he could do a few sit ups.  The years of seclusion have not been kind to him.  I’m sure the cigarettes didn’t help, either.

Elvis Digs Starbucks and Kool Cigarettes

We also toured the river front park and took a break and watched barges go by on the Mighty Mississippi River.  LBD decided to get involved with a statue tribute to a riverboat crash.  Save … the … dog!

   Save the dog!

Graceland was on the list of things to do because we just had to see it.  We had already seen Elvis, which was great but I *had* to see how the man, the legend, lived.  It was the most glorious, over the top, tacky I could have imagined.  It was a riot.  Thank you, Elvis Aaron Presley, for just being you.  You were a pimp, dude!

  Twitterzilla at Graceland

Twitterzilla’s in the hizzle at Graceland.  Did you know the “mansion” is on about 13 and a half acres?  Sweet real estate in the middle of the city.  He only paid $100,000 for the estate, back in the day.  The house would be considered a larger sized home in some Florida neighborhoods, not a mansion, by today’s standards.  It was a monster sized home back in the day.

Twittering at Graceland

Twittering from Elvis’s House.  No wifi but lots of velvet, plus mirrored and carpeted ceilings. Twitterzilla Kissing Elvis

I lost a bet, had to kiss Elvis, and then got in the car to hit the bricks.  Instead I hit the pebbles, two to be exact.  The first one just put a chip in the glass the second one was surreal and made an impact.  Gah! I put a little pencil line on the cracks to see if they would spread. That was rather irrelevant moments later.  Yes, they spread.  I’m probably a funny person to watch stumble through life when it comes to things related to automobiles, especially wind shields.

Blarg!

After Graceland and pebbles we moved onward and forward to the purpose of the trip.  6-5, who is of course, six foot, five inches tall graduated from the Army and it was really amazing to be a witness not only to the event but to see and meet so many soldiers and spend time on the base.

Thank you to the soldiers and veterans that have served our country.  American Soldiers Look how young they are!

Army Boots

These Are Very Special Boots

We haven’t seen these feet for almost six  months.  These feet carried a body that has lost almost fifty pounds during that time.  The entire company lost over 1,700 lbs.  The drill sergeant wanted us all to know that they didn’t do it with Jenny Craig, Nutri-system or a low carb diet.  They have a great weight loss program in the military and all you have to do is sign up for it at the local recruiter’s office.

What do you give a graduate for a “graduating from the military” gift?  Maybe a four leaf clover found on base and laminated with clear packing tape found in the car because you’re momster a real estate agent and she rolls with gear, all kinds of gear and a pink knife.

Chris and 6-5

Commence Miss Clairol and Preference-because-I’m-worth-it, jokes.  Yes, I know the gray streak is wider, my mirror isn’t broken.  I’m using it to distract from the bingo wings and man hands.  Besides, this was one of the kids that helped put those white hairs up there so I’m milking it for all it’s worth. I’m not done working this angle, so I can’t cover it up, quite yet.

After the graduation we left the base we spent a few days in St. Louis just hanging around.   The Drury Hotel is super cool about dogs and  has rooms with a view of the Arch and within a 5 minute walk to the Arch Museum and the baseball stadium.  The Arch is a definite must see if you’re in the area.  The trip to the top is killer!

Al Gorithm on The Arch Thanks for catching up with my absentee report.

The End.

Be The Daisy, Not The Bee

Bee on a Daisy

Take This With You Over The Weekend

Be nice today.  Be nice tomorrow.  Just be nice, OK?  It is shockingly easy for people to be mean, anymore.  Go be nice, say something nice, do something nice, hug someone, tell someone you love them.  Smile.  I said, smile.

Touring The Florida Everglades

Pulp Airboat Everglades

‘Member Lumberjack’s Blue Airboat?

After the inaugural “new prop” run and guest starring on a future episode of “Cops”, Lumberjack invited me out in the boat with some friends.  (Yes, it’s was a filmed episode with Wildlife officers.  Only my kid.)

There are a few rules to airboat club, twelve to be exact.

First rule about airboat club is that nobody talks about airboat club.  I’m a rebel, sue me.

The second rule about airboat club is be on time at the crack of dawn.  Gah!  I had four other people to bring, besides myself, which was like herding cats.  We ended being up 10 minutes early because I started an hour early.

IMG_1316

The third rule about airboat club is always show the airboat who is boss.  Lumberjack is livin’ large and in charge.  I think I heard the boat whimper. He *demanded* the boat be pulled to the bank so the pansies afraid of gators could get on.

Airboat Mom

The fourth rule about airboat club is that if you bring your mom and she wears a bikini, *demand* that she keep her clothes on if she’s over forty.  See those hands?  She’s singing in her mind … (from the windows to the walls) get low, get low, get low.  Oh lawdie, she’s acting it out.  Maybe that should be a rule, too.  See that green back ground?  It’s called the river of grass for a reason.

Redneck Parkinglot

The fifth rule about airboat club is if there are other people at the swimming hole, revert to rule number four.

The sixth rule about airboat club is for the second boat in: Don’t fire up the grill while it’s on the boat.  Just sayin’.  That was a bad call.  <Steven Colbert wag of the finger!>

IMG_1481

The seventh rule about airboat club is when it rains in the Everglades God makes it rain like he is punishing someone … big time.  See those lily and their pads under water?  An hour and a half through the worst, bucket dumping, lightening cracking, I want my mommy, storm that changed our lives we realized that the water level of the Everglades literally rose from below Lumberjacks knee to over it.

He was standing out there keeping the boat pointed in the least painful direction because there was sideways rain, little bitty sing-ging rain and rain that that felt like it was coming from the ground.  Homage to Forest Gump, since the boat is named Jenny (pronounced Jen-Nay like Forest Gump’s boat).

We were stationary because the rain was so heavy Lumberjack even couldn’t even to see to drive.  We were scared crazy with the lightening but declared that it was all worth it, would do it again and had fits of punch-drunk laughter, huddling like wet cats under some used Bimini top a few friends of his ribbed him for buying.  (Thank you for buying it, Lumberjack. You’re the MAN!)

Driving Out of The Storm

The eighth rule of airboat club is: This too shall pass.  We drove out of the storm, a little pruned, but we drove out and we saw why it rained so hard.

After the deluge

It’s because the under side of the plants need love, too.  Did you know that it flips the lily pads up when the water rises so fast?  Me either.  They’re burgundy colored underneath.  The whole area was crimson.

Then This HappenedThe ninth rule about airboat club is wear glasses so that a dragon fly doesn’t take out an eye and keep your mouth closed.  Lumberjack swerved to avoid a gator nest and went through some reeds or grass or something Evergladey.  When he got back on the path I heard someone say, there’s a stick bug on your mom. I was totally distracted with the praying – freeking - mantis on my leg to worry about the stick bug.  I was reminded, again, that whizzing in the boat was frowned upon.  What is it with this kid dousing me with bugs when I get in his boat?

Ryan, my hero, took that stick bug off my back, just before it climbed in my ear and ate my brains out.  Debra, Ryan’s mother, was somewhere in Australia within thirty seconds of seeing this creature within brain eating distance.   For the record, it only looks small in the picture because of the special, imported film that I’m using.

Everglades Hilton

The tenth rule about airboat club is that people live in the Everglades and love the Everglades so be respectful – take only pictures, leave only boat wakes.  Plus, those people there might have a hut to hang out in if you make it there before the dookie hits the fan.  We didn’t make it to the “Hilton” before the storm if you didn’t catch that the first time I said it. This was the consolation prize, trip to the Everglades Hilton, which is really someone’s hunt camp.

Its 5 oclock somewhere

Taking a picture of a non-ticking clock stuck appropriately at five, so that it’s always five o’clock somewhere … at least when one is at the Everglades Hilton.

IMG_1326

The eleventh rule of airboat club:  Obey the rules of the road in the Everglades.  I don’t know them but if you go out there, ask a local.   For the record, the whole bug incident happened right about here.  If you strain really hard you might see a praying mantis off to the left.  Tim, aka Hoke, said to me, “Next time you see a praying mantis catch it for my daughter.”  Yeah right, buddy.  Not enough cash in the world.

Clouds in the Water

The twelfth rule about airboat club is that when the biblical storm passes you must be prepared to see a new beauty to the Earth that brings tears to your eyes.  Yes, you’re looking at the water.  Water so clean and so clear and so perfect that you can see the secret to life.  I think I heard giggling babies, smelled puppy breath, saw my grandparents who had passed on and forgot all about work for a few minutes, even.

Tenants and Landlords and Lawsuits

Bonita Springs Florida Imperial River

Why Not Just Communicate More Effectively?

In the last several years buying, selling and renting real estate has changed dramatically mostly due to the internet.  Consumer do-it-yourselfers are able to research any property, neighborhood and market statistics they need to educate themselves about the local real estate market.  It really has been a helpful tool for consumers but with the good there come a few snags.

Technology has moved faster than education regarding the power and etiquette of the web and most especially social media forums.  Within the last week there has been quite a stir going on regarding a tenant out of Chicago who published a negative comment about her landlord on Twitter.

If you haven’t heard about Twitter, it’s an online social network, micro-blogging website where messages are limited to 140 characters or less.  Accounts can be private or public, though it should be assumed that nearly once something is on the web; it’s there for good, on one server or another.

What this gal hadn’t realized is that by having a public account she had invited the world into her life, including a landlord that she was already having trouble with.  Her simple tweet claiming that the company “didn’t care” about mold in her apartment woke a sleeping giant who was clueless about social media or Twitter and, without asking her to remove the message leveled a $50,000 libel lawsuit for damages to their reputation.

By their own admission their spokesman stated that “We’re a sue first, ask questions later kind of an organization”.

Little did this landlord, a large rental corporation; understand how viral David and Goliath type stories are to the web and the news industry.  They effectively turned an obscure comment made by a woman with only 20 followers on Twitter into a viral outbreak.  They did more damage to their own reputation than 140 characters typed by a woman half way across the country that nobody was probably paying attention to.

At the very least lessons can be learned from both the tenant and the landlord.  If you’re a tenant, your landlord could very well be spying on you via your posted media on the Internet.  If employers are checking Facebook and Twitter accounts before a new hire, why wouldn’t a landlord periodically check in to see what you’re up to inside of their property?

That YouTube video of you doing keg stands might not be something that human resources or your landlord is thrilled about you doing, even if it’s in the privacy of your leased home.  Anything posted on the web is just a right click away being saved as evidence to try to get out of refunding a security deposit for damages.

Forgetting that you’re essentially letting anyone into your home via the Internet by what you post online is a big mistake.

What gets posted online effectively allows anyone, friend or foe, to know delicate, vital information about you, your family, your home and your possessions.  On top of that, publishing the wrong thing could launch lawsuits and flame reputations even when it would have been cheaper and easier to take the high road and work things out.
